‘ONE DAY’ TOURISM CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO INSPIRE FUTURE TRAVELLERS TO THE WESTERN CAPE

Wesgro, the Western Cape’s official Tourism Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, has announced the launch of the “One Day” campaign to support the tourism industry in the Western Cape during the Coronavirus crisis.

This innovative campaign uses digital content tools to virtually showcase our beautiful province to those currently in lockdown in South Africa, and around the world, reminding them that one day Cape Town and the Western Cape will again be open for them to explore and experience. Read more

‘THE SOMMELIER SERIES WITH NEDERBURG’, BY DAN NICHOLL

Popular television presenter and online wine personality, Dan Nicholl, is releasing a series of captivating videos to share the unique stories of some of South Africa’s most talented sommeliers. The 10-part video series has been developed in collaboration with one of the country’s best-known names in wine, Nederburg.

Combining personal journeys, industry insight, and memorable wine moments, each episode sees Nicholl travelling to a South African restaurant or hotel, where the resident sommelier is introduced and his or her story told, culminating in the sommelier sharing a single bottle of local wine, and pairing it with a delicious dish. Meanwhile, the opening sequence of the episodes showcases a different part of the Nederburg farm each time, allowing viewers to briefly explore the home of this much-loved wine brand. Read more

UIF RELIEF SCHEME FOR TOURISM INDUSTRY FINALISED

The COVID-19 UIF Beneficiary Process Temporary Employers Relief Scheme (TERS) has been finalised and applications are open.

TERS is the final product of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the Department of Labour.

CEO of the TBCSA, Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, told Tourism Update that the main priority of this relief scheme was to ensure that UIF was paid quickly to those in the tourism industry.

“There are many companies in the industry, who are unemployed due to the pandemic and might not meet the requirements of the COVID-19 Tourism Relief Fund, that are encouraged to apply for this relief scheme,” said Tshivhengwa.

“This contract is in place for 12 months and it could possibly be extended if necessary. We know it will take the industry time to recover from the pandemic.” The TBCSA and UIF will have meetings every five days to monitor the progress of applications and payments to beneficiaries.

The benefit is only available for employees who have been laid off or will be receiving a reduced salary as a result of the COIVD-19 pandemic. The application process provides an option as to whether the benefit is paid directly to employees or employers.

Targets set will see the UIF take up to 48 hours to verify information after receiving each application. On approval of the application, the UIF will take an additional 48 hours to disburse the COVID-19 benefit to employees or employers. All fully compliant applications will be completed and paid within a maximum of 10 days, said Tshivhengwa.

An employee will receive the maximum amount of R6 730.56 (€332) if earning equal to or above the maximum threshold of R17 712 (€873). Employees earning less than this maximum threshold will earn, on a sliding scale, an amount down to the minimum being the national minimum wage of R3 500 (€172).

Employees and employers are encouraged to download, convert and complete the National Disaster Payment Excel Template as it is a prescribed template that will require critical information from the employer.

 The towns of Paarl and Wellington are revealing the deep compassion that lies at the heart of their communities during the lockdown period by providing shelter and food to the homeless, elderly and vulnerable children.

According to CEO Annelize Stroebel, they have been overwhelmed by the generosity and commitment shown by businesses and the NGO sector. “I have always believed that a closed hand is unable to receive, while an open hand can be filled to overflowing and the past two weeks have been testament to that.  We have been humbled by the compassion and contributions made throughout our region and would sincerely like to thank all involved. The crisis is however not yet over and we urge communities to continue with their support. We would like to encourage you to make contributions from the safety of their homes to ensure that we can continue to provide meals and improve food security in our much-loved region.
