Afrikaans Language Monument
The Taalmonument on Paarl Mountain is a fascinating step back into the past. Built in 1975, and designed by architect Jan van Wijk, it acknowledges the influence of a variety of languages such as Dutch, Malay, Malay-Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, English, and the indigenous Khoi and African languages, on the development of Afrikaans. Guided tours are available on request.
Volksmond Coffee Shop is an ideal venue for Sunday lunches and sundowners, as well as for family gatherings and year-end functions. They also sell picnic baskets to be enjoyed whilst revelling in the spectacular views of the Winelands.
The Monument with its exotic garden is an easy access point to a variety of hiking and biking trails on Paarl Mountain. Popular events include full moon picnics and stargazing evenings during the summer months. Two amphitheaters are available for public and private events. The monument is an excellent venue for weddings, wedding photography and commercial photo and film shoots.

Limietberg Trail - two-day trail from the foot of Du Toitskloof via Bainskloof village Eerste Tol to Tweede Tol. Distance 36km.
Donkerkloof - about 3km (2.5 hours) to the small waterfall starting in the hairpin bend on the Paarl side of the old Du Toitskloof Pass.
Miaspoort - distance is 4km (3 hours) but it is a long and initially difficult walk.

A veritable treasure of architecture is to be found along a 2 km stretch of Main Street, starting at the Strooidak Kerk (Thatched Roof Church), the oldest Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. Zeederberg Square is surrounded by picturesque Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings. Paarl boasts one of only three examples of Egyptian architecture in South Africa! The walk ends at the two museums; Paarl Museum and the Afrikaans Language Museum.
Situated in the scenic Paarl Winelands where over 200 farm bred Nile crocodiles are on view. Visitors can sample homemade crocodile pies or browse the curio shop, boasting an extensive selection of articles fashioned from the exclusive Nile Crocodile leather.
We are open 7 days a week and offer guided tours every half hour.

Since 1908, when the first 9 hole course was created next to the Berg River, Paarl Golf Club has been redesigned and redeveloped into the first and only 27hole championship golf course in the Western Cape and now the home of Boland Golf.
