Virtuele Dans van die Vlamme / Virtual Picnic on Fire

July 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Madiba honoured with Picnic on Fire at Taalmonument
Unique live and virtual performance partly in aid of rural school

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day on Saturday, 18 July 2020, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM), in collaboration with Psychedelic Theatre, will host an exclusive festival of flames, fire and nature for 50 lucky guests. Although the ATM is currently closed to the public, it will be specially opened to allow the graceful fire dancers and their various flaming objects to captivate the audience for 67 minutes with breathtaking fire tricks, music and choreography. In addition, a beautiful video of it will be available later this month for a virtual display that anyone can view from the comfort of their home, while part of the proceeds will be used to buy sanitizers for Rondeheuwel Primary, the school in Hermon ‘adopted’ by the monument.

This initiative ties in with the day’s goal of inspiring individuals to make the world a better place by spending 67 minutes of their time making a difference in someone’s life. According to the ATM director, Michael Jonas, the idea is to host an intimate onsite and virtual show so that people can remain safer whilst being entertained during these challenging Covid-19 times. “At the same time, you will know that part of your financial contribution will make a difference to these children. In addition, it helps these performers that are such a popular attraction at the monument and makes us all feel as though things are a bit more normal,” he says.

“Our recent online webinar, music concert, coronavirus writing competition and Groen Galery exhibit have all been very well received on social media, but we would also like to once again host events at the ATM that attract people to the beautiful scenery and outdoors. Of course, we continue our virtual offerings so that the monument and museum reach as many people worldwide as possible.”

Lanél van der Kolff, actress and founder of the Psychedelic Theatre, as well as her talented dancers’ daring tricks and storytelling will enrich your sensory stimuli, as the visual representation ranges from physical theatre to interactive fire play that will take you to another level of theatrical experience. To get an idea of this, see their previous performances at www.facebook.com/afrikaansetaalmonument/videos/2104223876308787/

The show on Saturday, 18 July 2020, starts at 18:30 and costs only R100 per person. In terms of current coronavirus measures, only 50 guests will be allowed and all must wear masks. All necessary precautions will be adhered to at the monument, including measuring temperatures and the use of sanitizers, and anyone who is feeling ill at all is requested to stay home. Interested parties must book and pay electronically in advance by contacting Jeffrey Pietersen on bemarking2@taalmuseum.co.za or 021 863 0543/872 3441. Remember warm clothing and blankets, and feel free to bring a picnic basket and drinks (no glass). Unfortunately, no food and beverages can be sold.

The virtual Picnic on Fire takes place online from 31 July 2020 from 18:30 via https://tickets.computicket.com/ and can be streamed on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Until the start time, tickets can be purchased online at R50 (a one-time voucher and PIN will be provided), so more than one person can watch the show together. It will be available on Computicket’s website until 31 August this year, but if you were caught on the hop, you can still obtain a voucher until 30 August 2020. If any technical or other issues are encountered, contact info@computicket.com or use the online messaging service.
