Taalmonument Choir Festival
14 March 2019 from 19:00 – 22:00
Experience inspiring choir festival’s crescendo once again at Taalmonument.
14 choirs will promote choral music amongst a wider audience.
Thanks to the high note on which last year’s first choir festival ended, the second Taalmonument Choir Festival will be held on Thursday, 14 March 2019, during which choirs will put their best notes forward – this year with well-known Cape Town Opera’s Chorus Maestro, Marvin Kernelle, as master of ceremonies.
“One of the goals of this festival is to promote choral music,” says Christine Bam, co-organiser and a mezzo soprano and vocal coach in own right. “There is no competition or judging linked to this event. It’s a fun event for choirs to sing, enjoy the day and network with other choirs.”
The day also offers choirs the opportunity to raise funds through ticket sales, while giving learners, their families and the wider public a chance to share their love of music. The 14 choirs of Voce Armoniche, Laerskool Aristea, Laerskool Bastion, Hoërskool Cradock, Hoërskool De Kuilen, William Lloyd Primêr, Hoërskool Brackenfell, Laer Meisieskool Paarl, Hoër Meisieskool Paarl, Paarl Primêre Seunskool, Worcester Voorbereiding, Hoërskool Namakwaland, Laer Meisieskool La Rochelle and Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle will entertain guests with a wide variety of music, individually and jointly. The mass choral work with which this unique, enjoyable evening will conclude, is ‘Blou’ (lyrics and music by André Swiegers, arrangement by Alna Smit).
“We are also very excited to welcome Kernelle as master of ceremonies,” says Bam. Kernelle is not only an opera singer and since 2014 Cape Town Opera’s choirmaster, but is also a well-known face at choral events. He was recently a judge of the popular Varsity Sing series as well as a judge for the World Choir Games held in South Africa last year.
The Taalmonument Choir Festival takes place at the Amphitheatre on Paarl Mountain, and food and beverage stalls will be available. The gates open at 17:00 with the background sounds of the Imbhewu Marimba band, and the festival commences at 19:00.
Tickets (R120 for adults and R60 for children under 12) can be purchased at Computicket and at the Amphitheatre’s gates. Visitors are requested to bring warm clothes. Unfortunately, no fires, dogs, own food or beverages are allowed. Access is controlled, and sufficient parking is available.
For more information regarding the choir festival, call +27 (0) 83 621 8483 or send an email to email@example.com.
