BARLEY & BILTONG at SPICE ROUTE (23 – 25 SEP)
Barley and Biltong Emporium, known for their delectable ‘larger-than-life’ burgers, home-made biltong and CBC craft beer offerings, will be making the most of the warmer spring weather, and light up the braai outdoors during the long weekend (23 to 25 September). Restaurant visitors can look forward to succulent meat straight from the open fire including boerewors, locally sourced from Spice Route Destination’s next door neighbour, Fairview, served with a traditional favourite, pap and smoor. Another Heritage Weekend menu highlight includes a good ole’ sirloin steak roll with rocket, tomato, caramelised onions and chimichurri sauce plus double-fried chips. While these limited edition, black board offerings promise to hike up any appetite, Barley and Biltong Emporium’s standard a la carté menu, kiddies’ selections and beverages will be available.

LA GRAPPERIA PIZZERIA at SPICE ROUTE (24 SEP)
Another great Heritage Day lunch spot at Spice Route Destination, right next door to the iconic Wilderer Distillery, is La Grapperia Pizzeria and Bistro to offer an entertainment-filled 24 September (only) and fully fledged German braai menu. Those who have a knack for traditional German food are in for a treat as the restaurant, usually known for its German/Italian bistro offerings, Wilderer gin, and panoramic views of the Drakenstein Mountains, will be preparing selected meat cuts on the fire. Added to this will be live music by the Pappa Grappa jazz band from 11h30 to 15h30 and kiddies entertainment for most of the day.

BERTUS BASSON at SPICE ROUTE (24 SEP)
For a leisurely Heritage Day lunch filled with South African favourites, look into Bertus Basson at Spice Route’s decadent four-course menu. Think vetkoek, chicken curry, Tannie Hetta’s apple pie and much more, all served in a beautiful setting. The set menu, a standard Sunday-only offering, requires a pre-booking at R310 per adult. Picnic lovers are welcome to fill a basket with wine, cured meats, fresh salads and home baked patisseries from the restaurant’s Pak-’n-Mandjie section and settle on a sunny spot on Spice Route Destination’s sprawling lawns.

CANNON FIRING AT THE AFRIKAANS LANGUAGE MONUMENT (24 SEP)
Would you be interested to fire a real cannon? If so AND If you are clever enough then you have to visit the Afrikaanse Taalmonument for their cannon firing on Heritage Day!
Join them this Saturday, 24 September 2017 (Heritage Day) at 11:30 am for a short talk on the history of the South Africa’s cannons as a form of communication, as well as a demonstration of the use of all the loading gear. The cannon is loaded with gunpowder and there is no projectile in it, so all is safe!The firing is part of a series held in collaboration with CAOSA (Cannon Association of South Africa).
The cannon, a Half Pounder, is fired at 12am from the Garden Theatre stage. The cannoneer will ask a question about the cannon or cannon history and a member of the public who answers correctly, will get the opportunity to fire the cannon.
You will even receive a certificate as proof that you have fired the cannon at the Taalmonument!

FESTIVAL OF HEALING (24 & 24 SEP)
The Festival of Healing is taking place in Paarl. It is an initiative of the Institute for the Healing of Memories and Camissa Solutions, the event seeks to blend the healing forces of nature, music, poetry and holistic practice into a healing recipe. The Festival itself, is the culmination of a weeklong conference, with representatives from all over the world. Pain in all its forms is unpacked, and healing responses are formulated.
The Festival is premised on an old German adage; “Share your pain and your pain is halved. Share your Joy and Joy is multiplied.”The programming formulary is diverse, reflecting multiple musical genres and performance art. It aims for inclusivity across demographic and psycho-graphic divides. Music, Poetry and Story-telling finds its place among the lush blooms on multiple stages.
So too does, Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, Origami and other holistic practises from all over the world.
Children and Youth are the only VIP’s.They will always enter for free. It is after-all their future that we are fighting for.Prepare to be inspired!!
