Summer has arrived and wine festivals abound, tourists and locals alike can sample the luscious beverages from some of the best wine farms in the Western Cape. If you’re a fan of these intoxicating events, one calendar highlight not to miss is the third Proe Paarl Wine Festival, happening at a range of venues in Paarl.

The festival started on Wednesday, November 16 and will run until Sunday, December 18 2016.

Paarl is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, and that honour comes with a rich history and dynamic cultural background. The Proe Paarl Wine Festival celebrates what makes this charming town, with its oak-lined streets and awe-inspiring scenery, a must–see for any visitor.

Those who attend can look forward to a jam-packed programme, from wine tastings to great food and plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Bring the whole family along and get the taste for the Cape Winelands on this perfect family day out.
There are 13 attractions participating in the Proe Paarl Festival namely; Boland Cellar, Grande Roche Hotel, Knus Karoo Kombuis, KWV Wine Emporium, Laborie, Landskroon, Rhebokskloof Estate, Under Oaks, Windmeul Cellar, Afrikaanse Taalmonument and The Next 48Hours visited four of these places.

Knus Karoo Kombuis
Knus Karoo Kombuis owned by two sisters Nicolene Diedericks and Madelein Neethling is situated at the foot of Paarl Rocks, set on a working wine and fruit farm invites you to enjoy the private picnic between the plum orchards. Upon arrival at Knus, a golf cart will escort the guests to their own secluded picnic spot and will be collected two hours later.

Guests have a choice between: 2x Fresh pressed Apple, Carrot and Ginger Juices or  Leopard’s Leap Chardonnay Pinot Noir or Leopard’s Leap Chenin Blanc or 2x Bergriver Lager.

Landskroon is situated along the South Western slopes of Paarl mountain, 40 minutes from Cape Town and right in the heart of Cape Winelands. The Landskroon Estate offers a wide variety of quality white and red wines at affordable prices and Landskroon’s Cape Vintage has established itself as one of the leading fortified wines of South Africa.
New to the estate this season is their food & wine pairings that include:
The Heritage Food & Wine Pairing; five Landskroon wines paired with cheese, olives, droe wors and Turkish delight. It cost R75 per person.
The Five Paul’s Food & Wine Pairing: Five Paul de Villiers wines paired with cheese, olives and biltong. This costs R125 per person.
Bookings are essential for groups of eight people and more.
Wine tasting which includes five wines costs only R20.
Landskroon also offers a ‘Bring Your Own Picnic’.     You can bring your own food and enjoy the picnic on their scenic lawn overlooking the vineyards and Table Mount. The picnic costs R30 for adults(wine tasting included), R20 for students( wine tasting included for over 18’s) and R5 for kids( 6- 12 years), they provide tables upon request . Pre-Packed picnics can be ordered to enjoy on Saturdays and costs R120 for adults and R70 for kids.
Landskroon is family friendly and offers a self catering cottage for a family four to six people which cost R900 per night.

Boland Cellar
Bolands Cellar, a beautiful cellar at the foot of Paarl mountain has been a proud part of the South African wine industry since 1941. It’s a diverse and relevant company shaped through family collaborations. The Cellar opened their new Boland Bistro last month November 16. They invite you to come enjoy the delicious bistro-style meals on the lush lawns overlooking the Paarl Valley. Be sure to bring along the little ones to enjoy their own menu and a kids play area.
They offer free wine tasking. On the first Wednesday of every month they offer a discount on every wine.
