Enchanting ‘Classic Picnic’ at Taalmonument
Beloved musicians’ talented sounds will delight
The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) plays host to a group of classical music stars who will entertain guests on Saturday, 5 December 2020, with amazing versions of classical and modern classical music while the sun melts away behind the iconic monument.
‘Classic Picnic’ is the perfect opportunity to kick off the shoes on the lush green lawns of the monument, have a picnic with friends and family, and be carried away by the harmonious sounds. The music will be performed by Cape Town Opera Chorus members Christine Bam, Ernestine Stuurman, Marvin Kernelle, Siphesihle Mdena and Luvo Rasemeni as well as Paarl local Jayson Kleinschmidt of ‘Maak My Famous’ fame.
Bam is a mezzo-soprano who has performed locally and internationally with productions including Porgy and Bess, La Bohème, Grace Notes, African Angels and Così fan tutte. Stuurman is a lyrical soprano who has performed the roles of Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Maria in West Side Story and Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess. She performs locally and internationally. Rasemeni is a versatile artist singing bass-baritone and performing various genres of music. In 2007, he joined the Isango Ensemble Theatre Company and toured London, Australia, Asia, Europe and America. Kernelle, the chorus master of Cape Town Opera Chorus, has been the chorus master and assistant conductor for local and international productions of amongst others Carmen, Mandela Trilogy, Le Nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Maria Stuarda, La Traviata and The Flying Dutchman.
Kleinschmidt, born and bred in Paarl, took part in this year’s ‘Maak My Famous’ reality TV competition where, out of 8 000 entries, he progressed to the top 10. This singer’s musical genre ranges from light opera arias, classical and musicals to contemporary music in English, Afrikaans, French and Italian.
Guests are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or pre-order one from the Oppi Berg Mobile Café on 060 382 9938 (R250 per couple, R450 per family of four). The café will also be open for other food and drinks. Dress warmly and bring a torch, and a mask. See www.taalmuseum.co.za/covid-19/ for the specific protocols.
