Drakenstein Municipality will be the host municipality for the Paarl MTB Challenge (incorporating the South African Mountain Bike National Championships) on Saturday, 1 May 2021.

Paarl is rapidly gaining a reputation as the Mecca of South African cycling, with several top-class cycling meetings taking place here annually.

Four distances are on offer to cater for riders of different abilities: 20km, 40km, 60km, and 85km. Although the routes go through over 50 different properties around Paarl, the host for the start and finish is Spice Route Destination. The first race starts at 07:00 and the last one at 10:33 am.

Alderman Conrad Poole, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, said it was important for the Municipality to encourage and promote these events. In December last year the Municipality presented its first Bike2Work day to encourage residents and staff to take up a more active, healthier lifestyle in what is increasingly becoming known as Cycle City.

“Cycling is also regarded as a potential driver in the recovery of our tourism sector and the local economy. We want to wish the organisers and the participants the best of luck with this event.”

Entries are sold out, but more information is available at
