With only a few weeks to go, Paarl is gearing up to host not only one of the 1st events under Level 1 restrictions but the Mountain Bike National Championships .
Organizer Darren Herbst from Hero Adventure Trails said it’s been a pretty big struggle to get to this point where it looks like the Paarl MTB Challenge will finally go ahead . Covid has been a nightmare for all industries and organizing events has just not been possible . Believe me , we miss it just as much as the competitors and can’t wait to get going .
We have been working very closely with the City of Drakenstein and Cycling South Africa , it is an absolute blessing to have a municipality and cycling body who are so passionate about the sport and helping us to literally move what feels like mountains to make it happen . We are still obviously very reliant on national government regulations and will implement necessary protocols to make is as safe as possible for competitors but were just happy to be able to do what we love again. We don’t profess to be the biggest or the ultimate event , but we are confident that we will do our best to make 1 may a very special day for everyone who comes out to our special town to enjoy a great day of mountain biking with friends and family .
We have selected the very popular Spice Route Destination in Paarl as the Start / Finish location . Spice route is undoubtably a special venue with lots to do for the entire family ,so it fits in perfectly with the vision of the event . Space is ample and there are 4 different restaurants and a host of other artisans on the farm all with ample space indoors and out to give everyone lots to do and enjoy . The Routes traverse through over 50 different properties on and around Paarl Mountain allowing supporters and family to visit and support a number of the different venues in our town . This will not only make it a safer event as people are not restricted to 1 venue , but a great opportunity for visitors to experience the amazing array of attractions in Paarl while been on the race route . Events are a great opportunity to help kickstart a local economy ,especially in tough times like these so make a day of it, bring family and friends and come help us #SupportLocal
There will be 4 distances on offer come 1 may .
- 20km fun ride
- 40km adventure route ( including a standard and a E- Bike category )
- 60km Explorer Route ( including a standard and a E- Bike Category )
- 87km Hard Rock Route for the seasoned athletes
All distances are open to everyone to take part depending on your appetite . For those wanting to take part in the National Championship Categories , they will fall under the 40,60 and 87 km routes depending on your age category (more info on the entry portal )
To meet the necessary Covid Protocols we are going to spread out the various distance start times as much as possible over the entire day with small start batches. This is 1 positive from having to postpone the event to 1 may as the temperatures will be allot lower , making the entire day an enjoyable time to ride .
When designing the routes we have really tried to showcase the extensive network of trails that have been developed in Paarl over the last few years and competitors can expect oodles of single track , an array of great features and views all packed into probably one of the biggest variety of terrain ever included in a event of this nature . The 20km is fun and enjoyable for all, while the bigger distances offer more challenges , climbs and technical sections right the way up to the 87km that will be a massive challenge for all who take on this monster .
