The Afrikaans Language Monument on Paarl Mountain is a fascinating step back into history.
Built in 1975 and designed by architect Jan van Wijk, it acknowledges the influence of a variety of languages on the development of Afrikaans, namely Dutch, Malay, Malay-Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, English, and the indigenous Khoi and African languages,
Free guided tours are available daily and pre-booking is advised. The new Visitor Centre houses exhibitions and a book shop. The garden is perfect for picnics, has two kiddies’ play parks and offers easy access to hiking trails on Paarl Mountain. Popular events include Full Moon and Stargazing Picnics, as well as Picnic Concerts.
