JEWELL’S SUPRA

Jewell’s Restaurant is presenting a Georgian inspired feast paired with Spice Route’s Obscura Natural Wines. Your hosts are Charles Back, Charl du Plessis and Neil and Tina Jewell.

A Supra is a traditional Georgian feast synonymous with Georgia’s rich social culture. The word literally means “table-cloth”, signifying a large table set for a group of people to festively enjoy traditional food, wine and each other’s company. When Charles Back and Charl du Plessis visited Georgia in 2017 & 2018, researching what we now know to be the Obscura range of wines, they were privileged to be invited to a number of Supras and were able to drink in this culture rich experience first-hand! Now they would like to share that experience with you.

In honour of the traditional Georgian Supra, Spice Route Wines and Jewell’s Restaurant have come together to host 3 Supras of our own! Neil & Tina Jewell have curated a menu to be paired with Spice Route Obscura’s three natural qvevri wines. In keeping with tradition, each course will be made up of a selection of dishes all placed on the table simultaneously.

Although we’d love to have everyone at one table, in keeping with COVID-19 protocols, bookings will be seated at their own tables.

Fairview Homtini Italian Dinner

The annual Goatshed Dinners have returned in 2021 and on 30 July Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate is hosting their Homtini Italian Dinner!

This dinner is a four-course menu brimming with flavours from all corners of the Boot, expertly constructed by Goatshed Chef SJ Nel. This year they’re also happy to welcome charcutier extraordinaire Neil Jewell to the evening whose charcuterie has been added to the menu.

Homtini translates as a ‘difficult passage’ in the long-forgotten Khoi language. The Homtini pass, near Knysna, winds its way through indigenous forests. This was once the home of their winemaker, Anthony de Jager’s Italian ancestors, the Rabbolinis, who were silk farmers from Northern Italy. They immigrated to South Africa under the misconception that mulberry trees grew in abundance. On arrival they discovered that no mulberry trees existed, but through tenacity and hard work, they tamed the land and ultimately prospered in other trades, including winemaking.

The wine is a Tuscan-style blend of Italian variety Sangiovese, integrated with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is crafted to go perfectly with Italian-style dishes, such as tomato-based pastas, bread, cheeses, charcuterie and braised red meats!
